Let Your Journal Become Your Friend
When people write in a journal, magical things happen, and happy people tend to make journaling a habit.
When you make journaling a part of your daily routine, you are likely to notice the following:
- You are more in touch with yourself
- You can make better decisions because you are working through your thoughts on a regular basis
- You manifest more of what you want
- You have better plans for your life, therefore you get better results
- You are more organized
- You feel less stressed
- Your emotions are more balanced
- You have more self-discipline and mindfulness
- You can think with more clarity
- You feel more creative
If you think of a journal as a diary, know that it can be that, but it can also be so much more. These days, there is no end to the creativity that people are expressing with their journals.
I like to think of my journal as my companion. I go through periods of my life where I carry my journal around with me everywhere because you never know when inspiration is going to strike. Think about using your journal for any and all of the following:
- To record your thoughts (that’s the obvious one)
- To write down ideas
- To tell the universe what you want to manifest
- To record what you are grateful for
- To set your intentions
- To make a log of what goes well in your life
- To record the serendipitous moments
- To doodle
- To make To-Do lists and shopping lists
- To plan your week
- To plan your meals
- To track your habits and lifestyle goals
- To track your moods

One of the key habits of happy people is meditation. If you haven’t been meditating, now is the time to stop thinking about it and actually do it.
Meditation is by far the best thing any one of us could do for our health, hands down. The benefits are insane! Here are some examples:
- It helps improve mental focus and makes you more productive
- It helps you learn quicker and easier
- It reduces illness and boosts your immune system
- It helps you thrive on less sleep
- It makes you feel healthier emotionally
- It reduces stress and anxiety
- It makes you happier and more fulfilled
While sitting for a hour at a time doing nothing can seem like torture, the good news is there are many other ways to meditate.
You can meditate in almost any place and for any amount of time. Whether you are waiting in line at a store, tossing and turning at night, taking a shower, or doing dishes, you can use each of those situations to meditate.
After you have done meditation in small bursts like that, you’ll find that sitting down for a longer period of time feels easier, and actually enjoyable. As you start to do this, simply increase your meditation by an additional three minutes each time you sit down to meditate. By doing that, you’ll increase your stamina for meditation, and you’ll be able to experience deeper levels of concentration.

Hydrate Your Mind, Body & Spirit
Water is one of life’s essentials because it keeps us hydrated in the most natural way possible. It’s something that happy people make sure they get a lot of, and they view it as a lifeforce.
When we allow ourselves to get dehydrated, our bodies experience cellular breakdown, not to mention headaches, mood swings, and fatigue.
Fortunately, if you are reading this article, you most likely have plenty of filtered water at your disposal. So why do most of us not drink enough water?
I don’t really know the answer to that, but I do have some solutions! Here are 3 simple tips to help you drink more water (And to be clear, I am talking about drinking more WATER, not more soda, juice, or milk. The only healthy substitute for water would be herbal tea.):
Drink a Half Glass of Water Right When You Wake Up
You might want to put a glass of water on your nightstand as you are going to sleep at night so that you can drink it right when you wake up. This will automatically supply fluids to your vital organs right away. You’ll feel more energetic and alert, and you’ll have a half a glass of water already drank before you even step out of bed!
Get a Water Bottle You Love
If you love the bottle you are drinking out of, you will be more enticed to drink. You can keep it with you so that you’ll be more likely to consistently drink throughout the day. Plus, you’ll be able to track how much water you are drinking throughout the day.
Here’s a none-tech option that happens to be my favorite because it’s easy to clean, it opens with one-click, it’s non-toxic BPA-free, and it looks cool.
Amazon has a ton of water bottle choices at great prices. Check them out here.
Eat More Fruits & Veggies
Eat more fruits and veggies, especially ones with high water content like crisp lettuce, watermelon, and cucumbers. It’s much more fun to get your water intake from delicious-tasting foods than it is to drink tasteless water. The only problem is that you won’t know how much water you are consuming.
Load Up On Veggies & Fruit
When I am talking about happiness and diet, I always like to point out that we literally are what we eat. Think about it – the food you eat is broken down and the nutrients from the food (or the toxins in junk food) are then dispersed throughout the body to be turned into cells.
The crappy food that so many of us are somehow surviving on is void of nutrients and rich in toxins that lead to so many of the health conditions we are suffering from these days.
Plus, when we eat unhealthy foods, it’s like we are making it impossible for ourselves to feel good or experience happiness. We need the goodness of nutritious food to feel happy, and fresh veggies and fruits are the best way to get it. In fact, being a vegetarian can even make you a calmer person.
If eating a lot of vegetables and fruits is not normal for you, it can be a challenge at first, but here are some tips that can make it easier:
Add Veggies to the Foods You Normally Eat
It’s pretty easy to hide veggies in food. I do it all the time when I’m trying to get my kids to eat more vegetables. Here’s a cookbook that was written just for that purpose.
You might also try adding vegetables to your pizza – roasted zucchini is one of my favorite pizza toppings. When you eat a burger or hoagie, make sure you include lettuce, tomato, and onion. Even adding things like lettuce and onion to a steak sandwich is quite delicious.
Drink a Smoothie Each Morning
You can get a boost on your fruit and veggie intake right from the get-go each day by just drinking a smoothie. They are great because you can load them up with all kinds of good stuff and it still tastes delicious.
I suggest adding kale or spinach to each smoothie because those leafy vegetables have so much nutrition and you don’t taste them at all when added to a smoothie.
Try any mixture of the following ingredients (or make up your own):
- Chia Seeds
- Protein Powder (here’s my favorite)
- Coconut Milk/Milk
- Any other healthy ingredient you can dream up
Have a Salad With Every Meal
I learned this one many years ago from Tony Robbins, and it makes so much sense. He was suggesting it as a way of getting more water into your system, because salads have such a high water content, but it’s also a great way to ensure you eat more veggies.
If you weren’t having a smoothie for breakfast, you could have a fruit salad instead. Then, your lunch could either be a large salad or a main dish with a side salad. And it’s easy to always have a side salad with dinner. So that you don’t get bored, mix it up by having different types of salads and different dressings.
Make Homemade Soups
Store-bought soups are loaded with salt and additives, but homemade soup is extremely good for you, especially if you load it up with veggies.
You can add almost any veggie you can think of to homemade soup, along with any combination of rice, chicken, beef, and more. I especially love kale, carrots, and celery in my soups – kale holds up really well in soup, carrots add a delicious flavor, and I don’t normally like celery but I like it a lot in soup.
Find Sneaky Ways To Exercise
One thing almost all happy people have in common is that they exercise every day. When we exercise, our bodies release feel-good endorphins that contribute to our happiness.
This is so true that there are times when I am feeling lazy, lethargic, and moody, but I do some exercise at that moment even though I certainly don’t feel like it because it immediately makes me feel better. In those moments, all it takes is 2-3 minutes of jogging in place to start noticing a difference.
Exercising on a regular basis, however, has proven to be difficult for most people. That’s why I find it’s easier to incorporate exercise into your life, instead of adding it on top of what you are already doing. Here are some ways to do that:
Exercise While You Watch TV
When we aren’t focused on our workout, the time goes by quicker, and it feels easier. That’s why I like to use the time when I am watching TV to do some leg lifts, crunches, and yoga poses. It certainly makes me feel more accomplished than just sitting on my butt!
Take the Steps & Park Far Away
We are all accustomed to taking the elevator and looking for the closest parking spot, but these are missed opportunities that can be used to keep your body moving throughout the day. When time permits, look for ways to get little mini workouts in just by taking the “more difficult” route.
Look at Exercise Differently
For the most part, when we are cleaning the house, we’re just trying to get it done so we can move onto the next thing. But what if you looked at it as a way to not only get your house cleaner but also to get some exercise. Then, you can go at it with more gusto, so you get a better workout, and you’ll probably finish it in record time. You can also do this with things like yard work, gardening, and even going out dancing with your friends.
Do More Activity You Love
There’s got to be at least one physical activity that you absolutely love. Do more of that, and you won’t feel like you’re exercising at all.
For example, a woman might enjoy yoga to the point where she actually looks forward to it each day (ahem – me!). You might love going for a daily walk with your husband or finally taking that dance class you have always wanted to take. A guy might enjoy playing basketball with his son or baseball with his friends. Whatever it is, just do more of it, and you’ve just made exercising a piece of cake.

Put Away the Screens
As a whole, we’ve all become too attached to our devices. It’s not just our kids; it’s all of us. While it can feel addicting, happy people have established a good balance between time spent on their devices and time when they put them away.
We used to be more creative because we had to be when we didn’t have our smartphones to occupy our time. So, if you’re feeling a little stumped just thinking about what to do during a no-screen time, here are some ideas:
Board games are one of my favorite ways to engage my mind and connect with my family and friends. Instead of sitting together in a room while everyone is on their own device (come on, you know that’s how it is), put them all away and play a game together!
Arts & Crafts
Whether you’re a woman, a man, or a parent, there is an art or craft for everyone, and spending time doing them is good for the soul. Here are some ideas:
- Bullet Journaling
- Wine or Beer-Making
- Simple arts and crafts with your kids – check out these ideas
What crafty hobby have you either left behind or always wanted to try? What did you make as a kid that you can now make with your kids? Get to it!
Dancing is just fun. It’s also a great physical workout, and it’s one of the best ways to interact with other people. While you may want to snap a selfie with your significant other or friends, there’s certainly no other need for a phone while you’re getting your groove on.
Spend More Time With Friends
We’re all kind of too busy for each other these days, have you noticed that? It’s certainly true with my friends, family, and me. We’re all running in different directions trying to handle everything in our own lives, and we very rarely get the chance to spend any decent time together.
It’s sad, and the main thing I want to change in my life right now is to reach out to my loved ones and spend more time with them because I think it is so important.
Happy people make time for friends because they know:
- They provide support and can lovingly tell you when you’re being a schmuck.
- They have been proven to be good for our mental health, helping us feel less isolated and depressed.
- They can provide accountability for healthy habits.
- They make life fun, and we share some of our happiest times with our friends.
